What an equity research analyst actually does day to day

Equity research analysts study listed companies and industries, build financial statement models, evaluate business risks, and write detailed research reports for institutional investors, buy-side funds, family offices, or research desks. Contrary to popular media depictions, the role is not about fast-paced screen trading; it is a quiet, reading-and-writing-intensive profession that rewards curiosity, accounting rigor, and clear reasoning.

In India, equity research roles exist across sell-side institutional brokerages, buy-side asset management companies (mutual funds, PMS, AIFs), independent research platforms, credit rating agencies, and global capability centres (GCCs) supporting international financial institutions.

Step 1: Build a rock-solid foundation in accounting and corporate finance

A degree in commerce (B.Com), management (BBA/MBA), economics, engineering, or chartered accountancy provides a helpful starting point, though no single undergraduate degree is mandatory if you can demonstrate analytical competence. Your first priority must be mastering financial accounting.

Learn how an Indian company's balance sheet, statement of profit and loss, and cash flow statement connect under Ind AS. Practice calculating and interpreting Return on Capital Employed (ROCE), Return on Equity (ROE), working-capital days, free cash flow, and solvency ratios from real annual reports rather than textbook summaries.

Step 2: Practice systematic screening across NSE and BSE universes

To develop sector awareness, start studying how metrics vary across Indian industries. Use a public educational tool like the Harion Market Analysis Learning Lab (Research Scanner) to observe NIFTY 50, NIFTY 200, NIFTY 500, and BSE Large, Mid, and Small Cap universes on delayed End-of-Day data.

Compare capital-light sectors (such as IT services or FMCG) against capital-intensive sectors (such as cement, metals, power, or specialty chemicals). Observing how margins, asset turnover, and leverage behave across different industries builds the mental benchmarks every analyst needs.

Step 3: Understand relevant certifications (NISM Series XV, NISM VIII, CFA)

In India, regulatory and professional certifications signal commitment and domain knowledge:

- NISM-Series-XV (Research Analyst Certification Examination): Conducted by the National Institute of Securities Markets (a SEBI institute), this is the mandatory certification required for individuals employed as registered research analysts in India. Its syllabus covers fundamentals of research, economic and industry analysis, corporate actions, valuation principles, and SEBI (Research Analysts) Regulations.

- NISM-Series-VIII (Equity Derivatives Certification Examination): Widely required across broking, dealing, risk management, and capital market operations roles to demonstrate understanding of futures, options, clearing, settlement, and derivatives regulation.

- CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) or CA: Valuable long-term credentials for deep financial statement analysis, portfolio management, and global valuation standards.

Step 4: Complete a structured training internship and build a report portfolio

Certifications prove you passed an exam; a research portfolio proves you can do the job. Before applying to analyst openings, write at least two to three complete, 10-to-15-page company research reports accompanied by your own three-statement spreadsheet models.

If you want structured guidance and feedback while building your first report, the Harion Equity Research Internship Program (a 60-day online training program with 40 free self-paced classroom lessons, weekly live mentor sessions, and an optional ₹500 certificate fee upon report review) walks you through the entire workflow: screening a company in the Research Scanner, spreading five years of filings, analyzing the sector, and writing a mentor-reviewed educational research report.

Step 5: How to approach equity research interviews

When you apply for research internships or junior analyst roles, attach your completed research report and financial model directly to your application email. During interviews, be prepared to defend every assumption in your model, explain the unit economics of the industry you studied, and discuss the top three risks that could hurt the company's cash flows. Demonstrating disciplined process over prediction is the clearest way to stand out.
